Being a huge Star Wars fan, this title has been on my wanted list for some time now, however, will it be another classic in the making, or will the PSP let us down again and leave us with a big pile of Bantha poo.
Renagade Squadron is based shortly after A New Hope, where Han Solo has created a secret team of seasoned fighters to protect the Rebellion, so secret that no one has heard of this up until this game. As with all of the Battlefront games the aim of each level is to either kill all of the enemies or capture all of the Command Posts. Though this does not sound like much, the amount of different ways to do this is practically endless, with plenty of characters, weapons and ships to use to your advantage, it won’t be long before you are killing everything in sight in the name of the Rebellion.

The main game mode is Campaign, here you play through a storyline based around the Renegade Squadron, participating in numerous battles, but in addition to this you also have Galactic Conquest, this is a mix between turn based strategy and normal battles, here you choose your side, Rebellion or Imperials and take turns trying to take over each others planets, along the way you can purchase more troops to reinforce what you already have.
One of the more exciting inclusions to this title is the online play, either through local network or the internet, you are able to join battles of up to 16 players (online only) in games such as Capture the Flag or Conquest.
So all pretty good yeah? So it’s unfortunate then that for all these good points there is a bad point, and in the case of Battlefront it’s quite a big one, the controls. Due to the way the PSP is designed, the controls do not lend themselves well to this type of game. Having only one stick for control really affects the gameplay, the stick moves your character and the R button locks on and strafes, that’s about all you need, this makes the game very easy and a bit boring once you know that’s all you have to do to defeat enemies. You can alter the controls, but without the freedom to aim with another stick, it just does not do the game justice.

Graphically the game is very impressive, although it can be a little blocky in places, it is pretty amazing how the developer managed to get so much out of the tiny handhelds processor, the sound also provides no complaint with the authentic sounds of Star Wars blasting through the speakers of the PSP being enough to make you nostalgic.
Overall Battlefront: Renegade Squadron will satisfy PSP fans who have been waiting on a Star Wars game to put in their console, it’s just unfortunate that the controls let down what is otherwise decent game.
