GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS: THE VIDEOGAME![]() Posted by Dan Pearson on Dec 29, 2008 19:19 (Dec 29, 2008 19:19) |

Mini games seem to be the Wii’s lot in life, for a genre that was massively underused in the past (Bishi Bashi Special and California Games only spring to mind), the market now seems flooded. Just like Mario Kart spawning many inferior copies with every company shoehorning their own mascot into a tiny kart, everyone now seems to be copying the popular Warioware titles.
Now it’s the turn of the Guinness Book of World Records team to tempt us with 39 world breaking themes for single and family play. As is the case with most of these games, they require very energetic use of the Wii controllers and work fine with the many different play styles required. But does it do anything different from other like minded games?
The layout of the game is a very well presented, you have a globe that you can walk around and go to certain highlighted areas, some of these just spurt out World Record facts whilst the others have three games to complete. The first of each is playable straight away and the others can be unlocked by earning points during gameplay. Each game has a record to break, personal bests, console and if connected to the internet, regional, national and world records are all there to beat and claim as your own.
![]() The all important mini games themselves are all based on World Record attempts and are a real mixed bag, some are real fun to play like balancing a bus on your head, throwing a paper plane into targets and there is also a BMX jump where you madly turn each controller as if you were pedalling a bike and then push up to launch the bike from the halfpipe and hopefully get a good height.
Unfortunately the game does have a major flaw in that some of the controls get in the way of the fun aspect, especially on the later levels where they are a bit too complicated for a fun family gaming session. There is another BMX level where you jump over a chasm, again pedal like mad and then do some mad combo to jump across, it just is not as fun with too much going on, plus if you don’t make the jump you have to load the level again which is a bit too time consuming for a quick play game. But for every bad game there is plenty of good ones like ripping up a phone book and growing the longest finger nails in the world.
Guinness World Records: The Videogame is a really fun family game which is only let down by a few over complicated control issues and a shocking lack of Miis. There is fun to be had here but not as much as in other games such as Raving Rabbids.
