After all the recent hype regarding the launch of Nintendo’s new console, we can now at last talk about the things that matter, the games and what better game to talk about than the one that comes free with the console, Wii Sports.

Wii Sports is the game that has been used to show off the new remote, it comes packed with 5 games and they are Tennis, Baseball, Bowling, Golf and Boxing, literally anyone can pick up and play these games such is the ease of use of the controller and the simplicity of the games, this makes for great fun in the household and you can even use the Mii that you have created on the consoles Mii channel, in the game, how cool is that?

The first game to try out is tennis, this is probably one of the best games in Wii Sports, although you do not use any buttons to control the game as the characters move for you, the game is still very enjoyable, you will be amazed at the moves that you can make by swinging your Wii Remote as a tennis racket and after a bit of practice you will be able to them show off to all your friends that you invite round. The game uses the Wii remotes rumble and speakers to great effect by letting you hear all the sounds that you would if you were playing the game for real.

Baseball is not quite as fun the other games, this is because you are really only reduced to throwing the ball or swinging the bat and that’s all, there is not much else to it, the computer opponents outfield also usually catch every ball you hit at them which is frustrating when you have just connected with the ball for the first time in five attempts, there is nothing wrong with baseball it’s just that this game is probably the one you will get bored with the quickest.

Bowling and golf are quite similar in the fact that you tend to use the buttons more in these games, bowling for example is fairly straight forward, you just hold the control like you would if you were holding a bowling ball, hold the trigger and take up your position and just before you bowl, let go of the trigger, the only other thing to say about the controls in this game is that using the direction pad you can move your player from side to side or combined with the A button, you can add a bit of angle to your play. Bowling is a brilliant game for all the family and it really doesn’t feel that much different from being in a real bowling alley. In golf you use the D-Pad to change the angle of your shots as well as being able to change your clubs, to swing the club all you need to do is hold the A button and swing, I quite enjoyed this game but I would say it’s really more one to play on your own.

The last game in the list is of course boxing, this is the only game to use the Nunchuck, using the remote in one hand and the attachment the in other, you thrust forward to punch and tilt back to block, by swaying left and right you can also duck and weave. To win all you need to do is thump your opponent as much as possible until his health reduces to nothing at which point he’ll either lay unconscious on the floor or get up for some more. This game is great exercise although for some reason sometimes it does not recognize some of the moves that you make, but it’s still a good addition.

With all the games that we have just mentioned you can see that this game would be great value should you have had to of bought it separately, however this is not all that the game has to offer as this review would not be complete without telling you about the Training Mode. The training mode is probably where you will spend most of the time when playing on your own, it comes in the form of mini games which are present for each sport, in bowling for example you are given the task of trying to knock down as many pins as possible, starting with the usual nine all the way up to one hundred, this is very challenging and makes for great fun.

Wii Sports was designed from the beginning with the Nintendo Wii in mind, it was always going to utilise the consoles features and it does this to great effect, this is why it makes such great use of the controls and really shows off what they can do and while the graphics and sounds aren’t spectacular they do the job that is required of them, if I could tell you to buy this game then I would, but I don’t need to because it comes free with the console, so what are you waiting for? Load it up.
