MERCURY MELTDOWN REVOLUTION Posted by Joe Anderson on 05/06/2007 |

If you have ever played Mercury Meltdown on the PSP then you will know how addictive this game can be, although there was always a tendency to tip the PSP to each side while trying to get your metal blob to it’s destination, therefore surely it would make sense to utilise the Wii as this would enable you to do just this (although with a Wii Mote and not a PSP obviously), and guess what? yes, those clever people at Ignition have done just that, but does it work as well as we would hoped it would?
For those who have never had the pleasure of playing Mercury (we will call it this for short), the game is essentially a puzzle game in which you must tilt the 3d maze to guide your mercury blob to the nearest exit, however thanks to the clever level design and thought that has went into the development there is much more to it than just this. At first the main objective is just to get to the exits while avoiding the obstacles, however as you progress through the levels you will begin to encounter teleports, platforms, levitators, zappers and all manner of contraptions designed to slow your progress, also during these levels you will have to juggle multiple blobs, switch colours to enable you to activated certain switches and pass through the relevant gates, amongst other things to reach you goal and the more mercury you have left when you get there, the better your score will be.
This version of the game is very similar to the PSP version in many ways, however as well as the improvements such as new levels and a few adjustments, there is also another major difference, yes you have guessed it (ed - although we did mention it earlier :-) ), the controls, the Wii Mote just makes this game feel like this is how it should have been played all along, by tilting the remote horizontally you can control the entire game, the responsiveness is fantastic and by playing this way you just seem to be mimicking what you where probably doing with your PSP anyway. As well as using the motion sensing, you also use the d-pad to control the camera’s rotation, 1 and 2 is used for zoom, with the minus button activating the free look mode. There are only really two bad points to the game, one is that there is no multiplayer as this could have added a lot to the game and the second is that it does get very difficult in later levels, so much so that it may put some players off, however everything else about the game works very well and it does look and sounds rather nice too having been spruced up a bit for the Wii.
Mercury Meltdown Revolution is a excellent puzzle game, while it may not be for everyone, the ease of use of the controls and the addictiveness of it all means that nearly everyone who plays it will find it hard to put down, this is most definitely the best puzzle game on the Wii, so if you like a challenge then this could be for you.
