The Metal Slug series had always been a favourite for gamers but does the DS version keep the other titles punchy pace?
Metal Slug 7 is a 2D platform shooting game, and whilst this may seem a little old hat do not be fooled, the Metal Slug games are the best of the best and the DS version continues the trend. After peace has been announced a Morden soldier had been spotted, to investigate the sighting an elite squad of six professionals have been put together to locate and stop Mordens army once and for all. You have a choice of one of six characters, Marco, Fio, Tarma, Eri, Ralf and Clark. Each character looks great and has their own abilities, Eri carries more grenades, Fio starts with a heavy machine gun and Ralf has a lightning fast knife attack. Some characters also have a special ability available, Clark is able to throw enemies and Ralf has a vulcan punch that can damage the toughest of armour. Once parachuted into the danger zone the fun begins. You run from left to right, dodging bullets and shooting enemies, at the same time you are able to save prisoners of war, each one will hold a power up for you to use, switching from your standard pistol to a shotgun, homing missile, laser shot and a cool flame shot. The balance of cool weapons power ups and melee knife attacks are still fun to play even if you have played all of Metal Slugs many versions. The small screen will take a little while to adjust to, however the game looks made for the DS. The characters move fluidly and the backgrounds are very well detailed. The sheet variety of enemies and their animations during battle puts a lot of console games to shame. As well as grunts to take out you will also come across enemy choppers and some huge bosses, each with their own attack pattern to learn and flaunt. You are not on you own though, at certain points of the game you are able to get into a Slug, these are armoured vehicles that pack a real punch, the Metal Slug is a tank that offers real heavy firepower and protection, the Slugnoid offers almost 360 fire support and a single manned Slug Flyer let’s you unleash some airborne firepower amongst others. On top of the main game there is also the training grounds, here you have loads of mini drills to complete, these can vary from killing a set amount of enemies to freeing POW’s and collecting items under a time limit. You get graded on each level and this mode also offers a quick pick up and play option over the main game. Although all of the above may sound quite positive, I do have one disappointment, there is no co-op, over local or Wi-Fi which is a real shame as there is nothing more fun than playing Metal Slug with two players. The inclusion of Co-op would have made this game an instant classic, however this is still a good game which you should consider.
