Buzz has returned to the PSP, this time though in his usual quiz like form thanks to Buzz: Brain of the UK.
Buzz Brain of the UK sees everyone’s favourite game show host return to take you through a selection of all new quizzes. The game comes with both a solo quiz challenge and a multiplayer mode, there is however no online mode included on this version of the game.
The Solo Quiz Challenge is quite a feature packed mode, when beginning the game you are asked to select a character, then you are greeted with a screen which shows you 15 different challenge types, although only three of these are unlocked to begin with. To unlock the other challenges you will have to achieve at least a bronze medal in all of the active ones, this will obviously continue until you complete the last challenge, at which point you will be awarded either a bronze, silver or gold medal for your overall performance.
The challenges in the Solo Quiz mode do vary quite a lot, one that sticks out is the snapshot challenge where you have to guess the answer to the question and then if guessed correctly you choose a square on a box, whatever square you choose reveals part of a picture and you are then given the option to either pass or guess what the picture is based on another question. The other challenges in the game include a quickfire round, where you have to answer fifteen questions, a time challenge where you have to answer as many question as possible with a minute, a picture this challenge, where you have to guess the answer to ten questions using the pictures as clues and perhaps the most challenging of all, the virus challenge, where you are faced with a scrambled picture and a question to match, as the picture unscrambles the virus will eat away at you score, so speed is of the essence here.
As mentioned previously, depending on your performance you will gain a medal for your score at the end of the round, this will help towards unlocking the other challenges. As well as earning medals the game also includes 14 trophies for you to earn, these include awards such as speedy fingers which is earned for answering a question correctly in less than a second, to the mega combo award, which is gained by answering 20 questions correctly in a row.
There is plenty of reason to come back to the single player once complete as chances are that you will always be able to try and improve on your score. As far as the questions go, I have to admit that I did see a few repeated even after a playing through only a few times, however there does seem to be a good variety of questions included in the game, therefore this really shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
The multiplayer modes come in three forms, first up there is pass around, which basically sees you take turns to answer a question, which in some cases is selected by the previous player. To avoid cheating the game will show a blue screen which prompts you to pass the PSP to the next player and this continues until the end of the quiz and the winner is revealed. The other mode available is Quiz Host, this basically lets one player host the quiz by choosing the questions. The finally multiplayer mode is Game Sharing, which basically lets you play against someone with another PSP.
As far as the presentation goes, the game is as glossy and well presented as you would expect from Buzz. The graphics are up to the usual high standards, videos and playing music without any issues. Buzz is of course also present with his normal personality and loud mouthed remarks, so overall everything here is pretty much as you would expect.
Buzz Brain of the UK is more of the same as far as Buzz is concerned however this is no bad thing. The game is well presented, offers plenty of challenges and also has the bonus of in game trophies, meaning that you always have a reason to go back. Add in the more than sufficient multiplayer modes and this is a game that fits the PSP perfectly.
