After being released on almost every format available Worms finally hits the Playstation Network, bringing with it the unique gameplay and addictive multiplayer gaming that it has become known for.
Worms on the PS3 plays much like the Xbox Live Version, you have a team of four worms and face up to three other teams. The backgrounds take the form of a 2D terrain, surrounded by water and at the beginning of the game each worm is placed randomly on the map. The aim of the game is quite simply to destroy all of your enemies before they get you.
![]() The beauty of Worms is the way that winning is realised, you have all sorts of weapons at your disposal, such as a bazooka, grenades, banana bombs, homing missiles and more bizarre items like exploding sheep, although the list really does go on forever. While some of the enemies are more comical than others, everyone of them have a devastating effect on the enemy should you use them properly.
Using the weapons in Worms is probably the hardest part of the game to master, some are simple such as the homing missile which allows you to point a cursor near your target and then fire, while others take a bit more luck and skill to master. The bazooka which is the main primary weapon is used by pointing it in the general direction of your enemy and firing, the further away they are though the more power and projection you will need to use. There are a few other weapons that work in a similar way to the Bazooka such as the grenades and similar explosives. The more specialist weapons such as the sheep bomb allows you to simply throw out a sheep then when the time is right detonate it right next to your enemy, be warned though that this weapon can be a double edged sword as it will detonate itself if you are not quick enough, therefore you need to be sure that you will be far enough away from it should things go wrong, in fact you could take that advise for almost all of the weapons.
There are many more weapons that I have not mentioned which are available to use, however it would take far too long to describe all of them, so make sure you experiment with all of the options should you download this game.
Outside of the weapons the worms also have some rather nifty equipment to help them get around the terrain. The equipment includes items such as Rope, a Teleporter and a Jackhammer. All of these items certainly have their uses, the rope for example can be used to climb up the rock, swing down near an enemy, plant dynamite and then swing away again before the explosion. The teleporter meanwhile can be used to escape from worm threatening situations and the Jackhammer is great for burrowing into the rock to escape the range of bazooka fire. All of the equipment can be just as lethal as the weapons if used correctly.
![]() Graphically it is hard to say a bad word about Worms, each of the little critters is wonderfully animated and all of them seem to have their own personalities. The terrains are also lovingly crafted and even though there are only a few to choose from at the moment, you will be impressed by their quality.
The sound effects are perhaps one of my favourite areas of Worms, the sound of them plopping into the water or saying “Oh No” in a high pitched voice just as their health hits zero is always a classic gaming moment, the variety in the voice work also helps here due to the sheer amount of expressions and one liners on offer in this area.
Worms is and always will be a classic game, whether you are playing online or offline and therefore PSN is all the better for having this game in its catalogue. It may not have as many game modes or maps as other versions, but it will still probably end up as one of your most played multiplayer games and that says all you need to know about this title.
