FALLOUT 3: BROKEN STEEL
We review Broken Steel for Fallout 3.

Posted by Dan Pearson on May 14, 2009 16:19 (311 days ago)

Though fun to play, Fallout 3's previous DLC has been a bit short so is it third time lucky for Bethesda with their latest add-on Broken Steel.

Broken Steel is really an epilogue of the main story, although I won't go into the how's and why's as not everyone has finished the main quest. Steel picks up two weeks after the main story as you find yourself at the Citadel and are brought up to speed on the recent events on the Wasteland. The Brotherhood have managed to push back most of the Enclave and are now fighting pockets of resistance. Following your previous heroic efforts you have now been made a Knight of the Brotherhood and are asked to join a team in their current attack on an Enclave base. The action starts off pretty fast with you getting involved in a heavy fire fight between The Brotherhood and their huge robot Liberty Prime and the Enclave, before long you breach the base and go through an impressive fight over stairs and catwalks. The outcome of this first flurry of action sets the story off well and will then take you to other areas like Ordnay which has a huge Deathclaw infestation, although if you think these guys were tough on their own, taking out a pack of them in the tight confines of a sewer system is really hard and requires some skilful use of the VATS system.

Later in the missions you will come across some new enemies including ghouls and even new Enclave soldiers with some really impressive weapons to steal for your own destructive pleasures.

Though I felt the main quest for Steel was short there are plenty of surprises hidden away, I only stumbled across one when trying to recruit Fawkes to help out with the Deathclaws, hidden away in the museum is a new side quest, piqued with interest I also have managed to find a few more side quests, not knowing about them made it hard to find them all as with the main game each quest had an achievement to help you know what you are looking for, this time around you are truly on your own. There are also healthy additions to the perks including a puppy maker and also perks to level your karma from evil, to neutral and saintly to help gain some of the new achievements.

As with the other DLC, after a short download you load a save and it will sync up, but rather than a haunting radio message requesting your assistance you are just advised that the level peak has been increased to 30. Steel is best played once you have completed the main quest but you are still able play most side quests if you have not cleared them all, leaving a few behind certainly helped me get closer to maxing my stats again.

Steel is a great push forward in downloadable content, allowing gamers to continue with their epic quest along the Wasteland rather than restarting the game. I really hope that this is not the last of the Fallout 3 DLC as I am hoping for more returns to the great Wasteland. How about revisiting some old haunts and meeting some old faces with ongoing stories following Steel?

Our Rating for Fallout 3: Broken Steel
8.0
Story
Reopens the closed ending of the original and allows you to re-explore the Wasteland whilst fending off new and improved baddies.
9.0
Lastability
The main story will not take long but with new side quests, perks and increased levelling allows for infinite gaming pleasure.
9.0
Playability
The same great controls as before.
8.0
Originality
Rewriting an ending to allow for more story is both a clever and brave move and is well executed.
9.0
Graphics
The same high standards we come to expect.
9.0
Sound
Plenty of new speech from well known characters.
8.5
Overall
Hopefully not the last but so far the best DLC for Fallout 3, rather than the linear Pitt and Anchorage, Steel opens up the game and adds the important open world adventure elemet lacking in the precious DLC.
