ZOMBIE WRANGLERS
We review Zombie Wranglers for Xbox Live Arcade.

Posted by Dan Pearson on May 25, 2009 16:20 (May 25, 2009 16:20)

Just like the zombies themselves, there seems to be a never ending supply of zombie based entertainment over the past few years. TV, films, comics and of course consoles have all been infected, and now it's the turn of Xbox Live Arcade to bury us knee deep in undead innards.

Zombie Wranglers is based around cleanup efforts following a zombie infestation at your town. You can play as one of a group of four kids who have been entrusted with special weapons to dispose of these flesh eaters. Each kid has their own look and special abilities to master.

You are first taken through a brief tutorial explaining what weapons and tools you have on offer. Each weapon is mapped to the face buttons, melée helps when in a spot of bother and momentarily stuns the zombies, you have a ranged weapon that turns the zombies into mush and a cool trapper that you can suck in them zombies with, a bit like the Ghostbusters proton pack and trap combined. Each character also has a special move like a super punch or the really handy voodoo doll that will cause all zombies close to you to dance, making it easier for you to trap them. The action controls are simple but for some inexplicable reason the camera control is in reverse, so pressing left will cause the camera to pan right and unfortunately this causes real headaches throughout the game.

Zombie Wranglers takes on a cartoony feel with large and colourful characters, this is let down by the slightly poor and blocky looking buildings and backgrounds which do not change much throughout each of the twenty levels. As you progress through the game more areas unlock on your map, allowing you to find more secrets like weapon upgrades and collectables hidden in trees and garbage cans. As you suck up zombies you earn instant cash that allows you to purchase power-ups on the fly. There are small icons dotted around the map which you can purchase should you run over them, these include items such as speed boosts and extra health. To assist along the way you have a shopping list that can be brought up to remind you what your goal is. Each level the goals mostly consist of killing a certain amount of zombies but you also have a few collection missions and boss battles to mix it up a bit.

Since there are four characters to choose from you are also able to take your zombie wrangling online or play via local co-op with three other players, this mode is a lot better and more involved than the single player campaign, allowing for some tactical team work to catch all those zombies.

With all of the current zombie games being extremely violent it is a nice change of pace to have a more child friendly monster masher out there, but sadly the game does get boring very quickly and with the awkward camera controls this will be a game rarely played.

 Our Rating for Zombie Wranglers
8.0
Story
You are a group of kids entrusted with clearing up after a zombie invasion.
4.0
Lastability
A healthy amount of levels but boredom will set in way before you finish.
3.0
Playability
The awkward camera controls render the game almost unplayable.
6.0
Originality
It is a good but poorley executed idea.
7.0
Graphics
The main characters and zombies look great but the overly bland backgrounds and level design let's it down.
3.0
Sound
Uninspired midi tunes with a hint of Danny Elfman.
5.0
Overall
Zombie Wranglers attempts the kid friendly zombie fest but proves that without the blood, gore and violence zombies are a bit lame. This is one to miss.
