FALLOUT 3: POINT LOOKOUT
We review the latest addition to the Fallout 3 world.

Posted by Dan Pearson on Jun 24, 2009 15:14 (270 days ago)

Hot on the heels of Microsoft increasing their achievement limits for DLC Bethesda confirmed two final chapters to the great Fallout 3. This time we take a boat trip to the strange land of Point Lookout, but is the journey worth it?

Once downloaded and playing the game a message will pop up advising that Tobar the Ferryman will take you to new land. Make your way down south and you will soon find a battered but working paddle streamer named the Duchess Gambit ready to take you to lands unknown, for a small price.

Once you land on Point Lookout you are introduced to a few of the locals and shown a point of interest which begins your main quest. There is a large mansion on fire which you investigate, inside you meet Desmond the Ghoul and his two dogs Freki and Geri who is having some problems with the locals. Here starts the game in earnest as a full on running battle around the mansion takes place culminating in a cool last hope firefight in the huge hallway. Once the Tribals have been repelled Desmond makes you an offer which leads the main story down the now familiar choices scenarios.

Away from the main quest there are also a few side quests dotted around the island, just through meeting new characters will open them up, you also have a lot of items to scrummage for, but do beware as there are plenty of booby traps lying in wait for the unprepared treasure hunter.

The whole map is pretty big with a great variety of locations, swamp lands, coastal wrecks, a huge fair ground with dodgems and a ferris wheel, mansions and lots more to walk around and discover at your own risk ( I say this as the inhabitants are particularly nasty on this island). The initial scraps with the Tribals (similar to the slavers) are nothing you can't handle but the mutated locals in the swamps are another matter entirely. Usually in packs the Creepers are your average cleutus lookalike after a bit of radiation poisoning, they usually wield a double barreled shotgun and shout at you as they try to kill you, never too far from them are the huge Trackers and Bruisers, these make the Mutants from the main game seem like pussycats. They will charge you with their melée weapons and take a real kicking, oh and they are butt ugly, their Jason Vorhees like faces bearing down on you with each swing of the club ain't pretty.

The feel of Point Lookout is very different to the main quests with it having a haunted feel for inspiration, with the spooky houses, crazy locals at the swamp and an awful lot of dolls heads on pikes it feels like something out of an 80's slasher movie. The whole experience is like a mini version of the main game with all of the adventuring and fighting you would expect.

Overall there is no doubt that Fallout 3: Point Lookout is another great piece of DLC from Bethesda and is definitely worth downloading and booting up the old Fallout 3 disc for once again. PS3 owners will be looking forward to getting their hands on this and all the previous content before it, that's for sure.
