EA's big hitter returns for another swing at the golf titles, but how does this fare to last year’s exceptional Tiger Woods 09?
Right from the go EA are keen to show you what's new, you are presented with a list and breakdown of the new additions to this version, allowing fans to quickly get to grips with what's on offer, and for an annually released title, the new modes are plentiful. Hank Haney returns to teach you the basics of the game and also how to adjust your play to the new control system. With the Wii MotionPlus plugged it in makes this game a realistic challenge (even without I struggled with my swing). Even subtle changes in your swing will cause serious fade or draw to your shot. Areas like posture and swing will constantly let you down, there are however helpful tips and hints that regularly pop up offering advice. There are 3 play types available to choose from which you can change in the options as you get better, the All Play will show the shot arc and pretty much hold your hand through each shot, the Standard Swing allows for adjustments on your draw and has power meters for putting and the Advanced does away with all extra help and mid shot tweaking, leaving your swing and club choice all up to you.
![]() Also new to the game is the Precision Putting, where the downward pace of your swing determines the strength and only one club is available, rather than a selection of ranged putters, this is really tough to get to grips with but once you have learned the limitations of the swings and what is required of your movement you will be pulling off long putts in no time.
The main game modes are as always a familiar bunch, the Play Now allows you to jump straight into a game where you can choose to play the front or back 9 holes or if you have time, the full 18. The My Career mode is full to the brim of playtime, you can play for your PGA Tour card and then work your way up the ranks to be the best in the PGA Tour mode. To build your player stats you need to complete certain objectives to rank up like improving your score average and winning games. The Fedex Cup mode allows you to skip all of the playoffs on the season and go straight for the cup and the Tournament Challenge is like a highlights mode where you play in classic matches from previous years to earn grounds and characters. There are 27 courses to play over, 7 more than last year’s installment, each offering realistic looking courses and now with a link to the Weather Channel, allowing for real time weather effects including wind direction, which is pretty cool.
There is plenty of great advice from your caddy during the game plus lots of commentary from the sidelines. As with previous Tiger titles you are awarded stat points with each game you play, allowing your player to pull off more consistent and longer shots. You also can earn cash for skill shots and wins, and with this you can purchase new clothes and clubs.
![]() Included with the huge single player mode are a bunch of multiplayer games, Miniputt, TIGER, elimination and Target all make welcome returns plus the many different rule modes you can choose like Match Play, Stroke Play and Bloodsome. There is also the new Disc Golf game where you throw a frisbee over the 27 courses. By holding the Wii-Mote like a frisbee and using the same actions like tilting up for more air and tilting left and right to bank, the aim is to get to the pole on the green, avoiding bunkers and rough which incurs shot penalties. These modes are great and allow for some fun party games when everyone is not into a full 18 holes of golf.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 on the Wii is the most complete golfing package on any console to date with an engrossing single player mode, a great mix of party play games to accommodate for all players and a solid online mode with real time online tournaments. For once the Wii version has come out a lot stronger than the heavier hitting consoles, go out and get it and the MotionPlus now, you won’t regret it.
