LINE RIDER: FREESTYLE
How does this game fair on it's second Ds appearance?

Posted by Joe Anderson on Jul 20, 2009 11:11 (204 days ago)

Line Rider has been a popular game on the internet for a while now, allowing you to freely draw slopes and then watch as your character negotiates them. If you visit the website you are alb e to try the game out, draw your own courses and even try out designs drawn by other people. Unfortunately due to the constraints of systems such as the DS it’s hard to see how this game would translate to the handheld, however that hasn’t stopped the developer from trying for a second time and it has to be said that the results are mixed.

Line Rider Freestyle comes with three modes of play, first up is Freestyle Mode, here you can create your own tracks using the toolset which has been designed specifically for the DS, this basically provides you with all the tools you need to create your design such as the Freehand Line tool and The Curve tool, there are also different line types you can use with are represented by different colours , these vary therefore allowing you to place acceleration lines to help the sled gain speed, a deceleration line, a trampoline line and if you wish you can also place trap door lines and a destructible line. Any courses created can be shared using the track sharing option, here you can either share tracks Ds to Ds or you can upload and download tracks via the internet.

The next mode you can play is Story Mode, this is obviously a big part of the game and sees you take part in a series of challenges where you have to basically get past the puzzles set for you. Overall there are around 40 levels to take part in, which consists of you having to complete puzzles by filling in the gaps in the courses using your various tools. Since the courses vary in design you will need to make sure you use the right tools for the job, therefore if you need to get up the hill you will use an acceleration line and if you need to slow down to stop you continuing past the finish line and over the edge you will use the deceleration line. Each level also has coins to collect, gathering these allow you to progress further into the story and also unlock new items.

The story itself feels like it has been thrown in just to piece together the various puzzles, it is basically represented by cutscenes which you will unlock as you progress. The idea behind the story is that you and the evil Chaz are both trying to capture the same womans heart, although it seems that Chaz will try anything to stop you, therefore resulting in some Coyote vs Roadrunner type shenanigans during the cutscenes.

The final mode is the Puzzle Creation mode, this is similar to Freestlye in that you have control over what you are creating, the only difference here is that you won’t be playing them, instead this mode is used for creating tracks for other players to play on, therefore once you have perfected your creation you can upload it to the Line Rider website for other s players to see and use.

The graphics are fairly basic, however the cutscenes are well draw and do provide a bit of cartoon style humour. There is no voice acting on the Ds version though, therefore it’s all visual humour.

Line Riders main problem is that the PC version (which can be played for free) offers a lot more tools for the user and also has access to a lot more user created tracks. The 40 levels which can be found in the Story Mode are a great distraction however once you have completed these it won’t be long before you tire of the games freestyle mode.
