FAT PRINCESS
We review the cake eating multiplayer fight fest.

Posted by Joe Anderson on Aug 5, 2009 07:52 (188 days ago)

Fat Princess has took her time reaching our PS3 systems, who knows maybe it was all those cakes she was eating slowing her down, but in any case she is here now and for that we can all be thankful.

Fat Princess if you don’t know by now is a manic multiplayer game which is exclusive to the Playstation Network. The game comes packed with four multiplayer modes, eight maps for a bit of variety and a single player mode which while narrated is just a series of tutorials which will help you build the skills you need to triumph in the multiplayer modes.

Of all the games multiplayer modes, the main attraction is Rescue the Princess, which sees the two teams (one red and one blue), trying to rescue their Princess from enemy clutches. When the game begins each Princess is at her rightful place in the team’s castle, then as the action progresses the Princess will eventually be captured and taken to a cell in the enemy castle at which point the enemy team can fatten the Princess up by feeding her pieces of cake which can be found lying around on the map. The more cake the Princess eats the bigger she gets, which means that rescuing her requires quite a bit of teamwork.
The other three multiplayer modes include Smash and Grab which sees each team try to capture the opposing teams Princess three times in order to win the match, Invasion which has you capture all of the enemies outposts and Team Deathmatch which is a big and bloody fight to the end.

Everyone starts the game as a villager who has a basic punch and can carry items, to alter your class there are hat machines located in your castle, pick up these hats and you will change to one of 5 classes. The different classes all have their own strengths and weaknesses, the Warrior for example has a sword that you can charge attack with, Wizards shoot fire and have a charge attack which can freeze enemies, Priests are able to heal allies in a close vicinity, Rangers are good for long distance attacks and Woodsmen can harvest wood and metal to upgrade and repair your castle.

The good things about the classes is that you can change at anytime, requiring only a trip back to the hat machine in your castle or you can pick up the hat of any poor soul who has been killed on the battlefield.

Using the Woodsman to repair your castle does play an important role in the game, after all if the opposing team breach your castle gate then it is important to repair this as quickly as possible. Upgrading the castle is also crucial as it will give you benefits such as the catapult which allows you to fly through air straight into the enemy castle, while upgrading the machines allows you’re other classes to get stronger and gain new weapons/abilities, therefore giving you an advantage over the enemy.

While it may sound as though the Woodsman is the most important class this is far from the true as all classes must be utilized to win the match, therefore it is crucial that teams work together in Fat Princess otherwise things do start to drag on. The Woodsman is no good when it comes to rescuing the Princess therefore the skills of the Warrior in chopping through the enemy are very useful, especially when backed up by the healing powers of the priest and the devastating attacks of the Ranger and Wizard. There is no doubt that the team that works best together will win.

Graphically the game is a joy to behold, presented in a 1080p cartoon style each map is awash with color and very well designed. The graphics are also backed up with the very catchy, medieval-esc soundtrack which fits in perfectly with the action.

Fat Princess is one of the most original multiplayer games to date, adding such a twist to the modes you would normally associate with these types of games that you will not recognize them at all. Providing the developer continues to support the game in the future with new maps, classes etc, this title could turn out to be one of the most played PSN titles yet.
