The recent addition of WiiWare to the Nintendo’s mega selling machine has allowed some smaller companies to release their dreams to the mass market. Over the Top Games could be the smallest company out there with just four member of staff, but what they lack in numbers they make up for in ideas and programming genius.
The story in their latest game may be a little familiar to anyone who has ever played a platformer, a romantic interest gets kidnapped and you go to save them, but this has an interesting twist. NyxQuest is the story of Icarus and Nyx, for years Icarus has flown up to see his love Nyx in the heavens. Then one day fire comes from above, blasting the earth and causing Icarus to fall. Nyx travels from heaven to search for her love only to find that the once beautiful lands have been ravaged by a horrific war.
![]() The game starts off as a standard platform affair, you control Nyx with the control stick, she is able to jump and then fly for a short while to get to high ledges and also glide for a short bursts. You are presented to the gameplay in a very casual manner, the sands are boiling hot so they are a no go and the idea is to use Nyx’s flight abilities to stay high and safe whilst getting to the end of the level. As the gaps in the platforms get farther your skills will increase. At certain parts of the game the gods will gift you with certain abilities to assist you which are used with the Wii-mote. This is where the game moves to more of a puzzle aspect. You start with the power to move certain objects, if you are in an impassable tunnel, you can bet there is a block somewhere to grab and then move. This power is limited to the size of the blocks you wish to move, the small ones you can throw all over the level, the medium blocks can slide across the floor allowing you to get across large expanses of hot sand and the huge blocks can only be stopped, allowing you to run under them without getting crushed. Other powers include the ability to control the trajectory of wind, allowing you to travel through perilous traps and hazards and also the ability to hold fire, with this you can light lanterns to open new areas and also throw it at enemies.
The visuals are very impressive for such a small title, with some cool heat and shadow effects, the designers are aiming at more of a hand painted effect and it suits the game really well. Also worth a mention is the musical track, many small games tend to fall flat at this stage but on this occasion Over the Top Games have nailed it with a beautiful tune that will alter at certain times of the game.
The playability and quality of this game puts most companies to shame, just when you thought platform games could go no further Over the Top Games find a way to utilize the Wii’s controls and make a truly engrossing and fun title. Someone should get these guys to make a premium title and quick.
