2D games used to be the norm back in the day, however with the advent of Xbox Live and PSN they seem to be making a comeback. While some of these titles are just rehashed rereleases of games we used to play, there are still some original, brand new titles which deserve to grace our systems and none more so that Iceberg Interactive’s Trine.
Trine tells the tales of three adventures who find themselves in possession of a mysterious artifact which binds their souls together. These characters are a wizard, thief and warrior who once affected by the artifact then set out to save the world from the evil undead force. Sure it’s not much of a story but at least it explains why you end up controlling what is essentially three characters, all of whom have their own unique ability for you to utilize throughout the game.
![]() During play you can simply switch between each character by a press of the shoulder button, and you will need to do this a lot. Each character has an ability that you will need to use, the wizard for example can move objects or create blocks to activate pressure pads with his magic, while the thief can take out enemies with her bow and also reach otherwise unreachable places using her grapple. The warrior meanwhile is the brawler of the group, swiping at the enemy and taking them down with ease. As you can imagine you will need to switch between the three characters a lot in order to get through the various obstacles that the levels will throw at you.
There are certainly plenty of puzzles in Trine, most of them physics based, therefore you will need to use the wizard to conjure up blocks to clear your path, or to move objects which will then smash any doors blocking your path. Sometimes teamwork is also required, therefore you will use the wizard to move a platform before switching to the thief in order to grapple it before advancing further. The physics in each level are certainly pleasantly realistic though there can be a few moments when the action does get quite frustrating.
The game also provides players with some classic RPG style moments by allowing you to collect health and damage boosts as well as allowing some abilities to improve via the scattered experience vials. This mix of action, RPG and puzzles certainly helps make this game a very appealing one.
Graphically this is one lovely looking game, the art style is very detailed and combined with the lighting makes for a very atmospheric experience. It would be fair to say that Trine is one of the best looking games on the Playstation Store, and that is no mean feat given some of the big name titles on there. The music meanwhile consists of a soundtrack which fits in well with the action, while the voice acting is of a good standard but can grate on you on occasions.
![]() For those of a multiplayer persuasion Trine also offers local co-op play, which works well and supports up to three players.
There is no doubt that Trine is a top quality title, it looks fantastic and has plenty of original ideas which work well. Players who like 2D scrollers or indeed RPG games will probably get a lot out of this title, though I would recommend that everyone should try it.
