BOY & HIS BLOB
We review the latest platformer to hit the Nintendo Wii.

Posted by Joe Anderson on Nov 12, 2009 11:07 (128 days ago)

With a title such as Super Mario Bros on the horizon for Wii you would think all other 2d games would steer clear of the release window, however developer Majesco has had other ideas and with the release of Boy and his Blob they may just be on to a winner.

Boy and his Blob sees you take control of a young boy who meets up with a strange blob which has crash landed on earth, this meeting eventually ends up with you defeating some minions and trying to dethrone the evil emperor who has taken over Blobolonia.

Throughout the game you travel through four worlds starting in the wilderness, before moving on to the underground, Blobolonia and then the Citadel. Each of the levels are wonderfully drawn and have great detail, although they do vary quite a bit in style. The Citadel for example is a dark and gloomy place, while the wilderness is quite the opposite, with plenty of green and in contrast is a pleasant place to be. With each character and movement being hand drawn it has to be said that this is one of the most eye pleasing games on the Wii, the action is also super smooth as a result.

If you are after longevity then you will be pleased to know that the game includes 40 levels for you to get through across the four worlds, though you can complete these levels quite quickly. Throughout the levels you will find treasure chests, there are three in each level and once found they unlock a special challenge level, which in turn will reward you with goodies such as new game modes, concept art and some of the back story. Therefore it is worth finding these rather than just rushing on through the levels.

One of the main disappointments of the game is the load times, if these where to just take place at the beginning of the game then it probably wouldn’t be an issue, however they also tend to happen mid level, such as when you enter new areas which interrupts gameplay and in turn ruins the experience slightly. It’s a shame really because other than this the game is a pretty sound experience.

The games controls work really well, you control the boy by using the analog stick on the nunchuck, the A button is used to jump, while the Z is used to call to blob. Once you tap the C button the jelly bean wheel will appear and then you can feed you blob to transform him into all manner of things such as a balloon, ladder, trampoline and a parachute, this in turn will help you to solve the levels many puzzles, e.g. should you need to get higher, use the ladder or if you want to get across water you can use the bouncer to float, there is even a punch hole to allow you to fall through to the platform below, ala Echochrome style. There are fifteen different transformations altogether which are all useful and unique in their own way.

With the unique abilities of the blob, a challenging platform level when you become separated and some difficult boss fights this title really does it all when it comes to the world of platforming, I really found it very entertaining and hard to put down at times, which is a testament to the games wonderful design.

There are certainly some frustrating moments in Boy & His Blob, however it is a fun and wonderfully designed platform game which can stand proud next to the likes of Super Mario Bros. The puzzles and the presentation are a joy to behold and while the load times are frustrating, there is no doubt that this is one of the most unique and charismatic games that the Wii has to offer.
