Ghostbusters hit the PS3 back in June to much acclaim from ourselves when we said “Busting WILL make you feel good”, however can the same be said of the PSP title, which has not only had more time but also adds a few features not seen in it’s bigger brothers version?
The PSP version is unfortunately based on the PS2 game rather than the more high spec versions, therefore it’s not quite up to the standard you would expect in terms of graphics and gameplay. Rather than have you use the proton pack like you do in the PS3 version, here you just blast the ghosts with your stream to wear them down and then release the trap, therefore all of the intensity of trying to get the ghost in the trap has disappeared, which does take away from the action quite a bit.
![]() Unfortunately the problems with the PSP version become apparent as soon as you start to play, what the developer has done is map the camera to the face buttons, therefore to turn in a certain direction you will need to press the relevant button and while this seems this seems to work at first, it isn’t long before you find yourself completely frustrated, especially when you are trying to maneuver from one room to the next.
There are some benefits to the PSP version though, for instance you now have the ability to switch between four sets of equipment allowing you to gain access to eight unique proton pack functions and use gadgets like the PKE Meter and Paragoggles to scan and analyze targets, which while good does not make up for the poor quality elsewhere.
Graphically this version also suffers, character detail is nowhere near the quality of the PS3 version, and while this was to be expected, the PSP can definitely do better than has been shown here. The characters are very unconvincing and the gameplay also suffers with stuttering graphics and other glitches being a regular occurrence.
Thankfully though some things do remain intact, for example you still have the original actors contributing both the script and the voice acting which helps to add some authenticity to the proceedings.
![]() Overall Ghostbusters on the PSP is a bit of a disappointment, the graphics are not up to the standard that we have come to expect from the machine and thanks to the issues with the camera being mapped to the face buttons the gameplay is a very frustrating experience.
If you are a Ghostbusters fan then I would highly recommend that you stick to the PS3 version of the game as this provides an authentic and fun experience, rather than just being another badly done port.
