There is quite a catalogue of PSP Minis building up now, which makes it even harder for people when it comes to choosing one, however that hasn’t stopped Halfbrick Studios releasing their latest title, Echoes which is priced quite reasonably compared to some of the other games on the service.
Echoes shows the action from a top down perspective, the aim of the game is to guide your character (who seems to be a lady wearing a big hat), around the screen all while collecting crystals and avoiding the echoes whose numbers increase the longer the games goes on. In order to win the game you must collect the target number of crystals and the faster you do this the better thanks to the included in game leaderboard.
Once you get a bit further into the game you are also greeted with special crystals, these freeze time, give you extra lives etc therefore adding a further twist to the game.
![]() The levels themselves are quite varied as are the number of crystals you will be required to collect. For instance when you first start you will be running around an open level grabbing each crystal as it appears however later levels have you running around a figure of eight trying to dodge a load of echoes and collect around 32 crystals at the same time which can be quite challenging.
The arcade mode includes 22 maps altogether which is good value in itself, especially when you consider that there are also in-game trophies to collect, therefore giving you some incentive to replay. As well as the Arcade Mode Echoes also includes the Jackpot, Survival and Clockwork Modes.
Jackpot sees you trying to grab as many crystals as possible without hitting an echo, the more you grab the higher your score multiplier becomes. Survival meanwhile sees you start a level with 10 seconds on the clock, then you simply activate the crystals to earn more time, allowing you to keep going for as long as you possibly can. Finally Clockwork Mode sees you create echoes by grabbing the crystals, the echoes don’t move though so you have to manipulate time using the shoulder buttons in order to move them, it’s a very challenge mode this one and certainly a lot different from the other two.
Graphically Echoes isn’t the most eye pleasing game in the world, however it doesn’t need to be, it’s colorful enough to grab your attention and thanks to the addictive nature of the game play you can forgive the lack of detail.
This may not be a game for everyone, however those looking for an addictive game to keep them entertained for a hour or so a day may just enjoy this, especially when you consider the budget price.
