THE ZOMBIE ISLAND OF DR NED
We check out the first add on for Borderlands.

Posted by Dan Pearson on Nov 30, 2009 13:35 (101 days ago)

Borderlands is already in my top five games of the year, of all of the titles I have played in 2009 this is one of the few that I have wanted to play to the bitter end and max the achievements and still play (much to the dismay of the Mrs). Well now it's time for some DLC and even though it's so soon after release it gives us all another chance to travel back to Pandora.

Once downloaded a message appears advising that you can travel to a new area, Jakobs Cove by using fast travel. A short story update follows depicting the four adventurer’s quest for the Vault and what happened next and then you find yourself in a very eerie land.

Instantly you are at unease, Jakobs Cove is the opposite of what the rest of Pandora offers, instead of sun bleached hills and scars across the land are trees and swamps. On your short travel to the town you realise something is amiss, then a Claptrap asks or assistance in repairing some minigun turrets as it seems they have a bit of a zombie problem in the area. Dr Ned, in all his wisdom tried to further the advancement of mankind by carrying out experiments on the locals but as expected it went wrong and caused the whole town to turn into flesh eating zombies. As the story progresses you attempt to find a cure and start to learn some truths about Dr Ned.

The zombies start as your usual groaning undead, wandering around aimlessly until you get into close proximity, at which point they will walk or run at you, easy cannon fodder unless you get cornered by a group. They get a lot harder as you progress with some zombiefied characters from the main quest with new skins plus a few new baddies like the Torso that scurries along the floor with just their arms, an annoying chap that spits goo at you and the huge Badass Tankenstien that hurls explosive barrels. Each one can be dealt with in their own particular way, with the standards requiring critical hits to allow you to collect their own juicy brains, oh how the tables have turned.

The main story will not take long as there are only a handful of quests but thankfully this DLC also offers loads of new side quests via the bounty board, offering plenty to collect, locate and a cool boss fight against a fire breathing pumpkin head.

Just like the main game, whilst fun on singleplayer it is so much better as a multiplayer. It's very satisfying having four people mow down hordes of incoming zombies whilst waiting for a lift and then collecting all that cash and weaponry, though there did not seem to be any new weapons on offer.

The Zombie Island of Dr Ned is a great add-on for Borderlands as it keeps the core gameplay and the solid single/multiplayer experience. There are also loads of weapons to collect , some dark and funny characters and best of all is that it also drops you in a whole new location with this generations favorite whipping boy, the zombie.

Our Rating for The Zombie Island of Dr Ned
8.0
Story
Journey to Jakobs Cove to help with a zombie problem.
8.0
Lastability
You may find the first playthrough a bit too easy if you are above level 30, try it on the second playthrough for a better challenge.
9.5
Playability
Very easy to get into the controls with a little slowdown on the more packed levels.
9.6
Originality
It's all that made the main game great but in a little package.
9.0
Graphics
Though most enemies are reskinned, each design looks great.
9.5
Sound
Some great haunting b-movie tunes and dark humour.
8.5
Overall
A well priced DLC that sadly ends a little too quickly, it would have been nice to play with new weapons but we can't have everything. A perfect add-on for Borderlands.
