BLAST OFF
We take this addictive PSP Mini for a spin. Read our review.

Posted by Joe Anderson on Dec 2, 2009 13:28 (106 days ago)

Halfbrick Studios seem to be embracing the PSP Minis store more than most and now they have just released another title. This latest game is named Blast Off and it is probably the most addictive and fun PSP Mini to be released so far.

Blast Off sees you take control of a small space ship then try to activate a gate by rescuing a set amount of astronauts. The game is split into four difficulties Easy, Medium, Hard and Very Hard. Getting through the games 45 levels is great fun and as the difficulty up’s it’s a great challenge too.

You control your ship using the D-Pad with X being used to thrust, however you only have limited fuel and you will have to take into account the limited air and the gravitational pull of planets and black holes, which the astronauts you are trying to rescue almost hug. There is a twist in that although you can complete a level by just activating and entering the gate, you will need to rescue all of the astronauts on the screen if you wish to earn a gold medal.

Each of the levels , especially the more difficult ones, will require you to use some strategy and work out a way to rescue the astronauts without finding your ship crashing against a planet, this will see you using the gravity to your advantage and taking the long way around just to recue the men and escape with your ship intact.

Blast Off is a very accessible game, allowing you to jump straight into any of the missions, although to do so you will need to complete the game on each difficulty first. Unlocking the missions doesn’t take too long, and given that you will probably not earn all the gold stars to begin with there is certainly enough here to keep you going back for more.

Graphically this is a pretty good looking game, although there isn’t a lot happening on the screen, everything that is there is very polished and pleasing to the eye. The sound also seems to fit in well with the action, making the overall presentation of a pretty high standard for a PSP Mini.

Blast Off is the perfect PSP Mini, it’s a great game to pick up and play without having to commit too much time, it’s very well presented and also offers a fantastic challenge in the later levels. If you are looking for a budget title to help you pass a little bit of time then you will not go wrong with this. Excellent Stuff.
