EA SPORTS ACTIVE: MORE WORKOUTS
We review the latest fitness add on for the Wii.

Posted by Dan Pearson on Dec 6, 2009 10:01 (105 days ago)

If I learnt one thing from this summer’s EA Sports Active release it was that this "computer game" was not for the weak. At the time the grueling exercises and 30 day workout was hell, but after a while it started to fit into my life and actually make differences to my appearance. Ok, so food and nutrition were an element but considering both my real-world job and fun games reviewing job involved lots of sitting down, the small amount of daily workouts made a difference to my stamina and strength.

However, as with any exercise assistant it does start to get stale and repetitive after a while, workout DVD's will release a few a year around summer and Christmas to keep you interested and EA have followed a similar suit. More Workouts is an add-on/new game in the way that it has a lower than normal price point, none of the equipment bundled in from before but loads of new content.

EA Sports Active More Workouts is for the serious workout, it is still fun but aims solely at getting you fit and healthy by doing short, intense workouts. The 30 day workout has been put aside and replaced with the 6 week workout. The idea is pretty much the same but with lots of fine tuning to make it a more attainable workout routine. Each week has been broken down, showing you what to expect (including rest days), with every day you perform updating your journal and earning you a medal depending on your performance and what your nutritional intake and lifestyle data results are. This is measured by asking questions on areas like how many water and sugar drinks you have had, type of food eaten, motivation and other exercises you may have done during the day like walking, swimming and golf.

The exercises aim at specific areas, cardio, abs, upper and lower body, with each of the routines being flexible as you can either carry out the preselected workout or select your own with three tiers of intensity. Each daily routine now has a warm up and cool down routine with gentle stretches and movements, further reducing pulls or injury and increasing your heart rate.

The introduction to each exercise has a very clear video explaining what is required and then off you go. There is abundance of old and new exercises like curls, squats and reaches, skipping, running, cardio boxing and track running. These are then bunched into groups like the rather good step aerobics class, 10-15 min workouts, abs challenges and the crippling After Burner.

With each routine you are able to select what parameters you wish to work to so you can set either a time limit if you’re in a rush or a calorie burn indicator if you scoffed too many Angus burgers at lunchtime. Both of these stats are shown on screen at all times, with the rest of the game professionally presented, if a little easy on the eye. That said there are a couple of more fun modes included to move away from just watching your avatars bum move up and down to the rhythm. Having the title based on a tropical island allows you to partake in some fun activities including squash, water skiing and an obstacle course.

Since EA Sports Active More Workouts is an add-on you are able to transfer some data over from the first title and create a Fitness Profile, enabling you to keep a pretty solid record of your achievements, plus take weight readings (can be done via balance board), age, gender and also customise your own in-game avatar.

EA Sports Active More Workouts is a full on workout, unlike Wii Fit it will make you sweat and leave you breathless by the end of it, but that is the general idea and after a few days you really start to notice the difference. EA Sports Active More Workouts should not be purchased as a standalone title, the first title is recommended due to the extras like the leg strap and resistance band. Once you have worked through the first disc this is well worth a purchase.
