Whenever a puzzle game has reached its limits designers look to bring new elements into the mix, most of the time this will be power ups or something similar and sadly with the new additions something about the original game is lost. Puzzlegeddon not only brings a few game styles into one but bucks the trend by doing it really well.
There are two distinctively different game modes in Puzzlegeddon, Solo Brawl and Poison Peril. The Solo Brawl mode of Puzzlegeddon is best described as a tactical puzzle game. The main aim of the game is to defeat your opponents by blowing them up. In the middle of the screen is a 6x6 grid full of coloured blocks with the idea of grouping together five or more colours. You can move each line horizontally or vertically until you are satisfied and then press the X button to transform the blocks. Each combo of blocks adds to a specific special move depending on the colour.
![]() The tactical element comes into play with the power ups which are found on top of the grid. Blue boosts abilities giving you a stronger defense and attacks, green is defense, yellow has a disrupt effect like absorbing missiles and a radar jam and red is attack; each one comes with three tiers of power. Once the power is full your island can unleash it on one of your opponents (who can be online foes or bots), who of course are doing the same thing on their own boards.
There is a selection of islands to choose from depending on your preferred tactics, the Monster Mansion has more powerful attacks, the Wiz creates chain combos and Hot Lava's attacks grow in strength as you lose energy.
The Poison Peril mode does away with the opponents, this time placing you on planet full of poisoned gas. The grid this time is full of icons rather than colours, with the idea to transform the blocks to set patterns in as little moves as possible. With each successful transformation you earn more moves, run out and it's game over.
Puzzlegeddon looks great and is very colourful however there is a major flaw in the presentation, with all this action going on the actual puzzle block and font of the text is tiny, even on a reasonably large TV screen it is far too small, making it a strain on the eyes.
Puzzlegeddon surprised with it’s addictive and fresh gameplay and it succeeds well in mixing up a few game genres into one. Having both solid online and offline modes this is a great puzzle game to own on your Xbox 360.
