Addictive: When you think of this word in a gaming sense you think Tetris, Space
Invaders and in recent years Pro Evolution Soccer.
Now
when I bought my Xbox 360 I thought about all the games with beautiful graphics
and next generation game play that would be burning a hole in my retina, but not
for one second did I think that the most addictive of all the launch titles
would be a Xbox Live Arcade game, this game being called Geometry Wars.
Now
the graphics in this game may not be next generation quality, but it has the two
main ingredients which I think every successful game needs, basically it is
addictive and it is original and when you think of all the other games that have
these ingredients you can immediately tell why it has been such a big hit with
everyone who has downloaded games from Xbox Live.
The Game
Now the main purpose of this game like many others is
to shoot things, you control a small magnet shaped ship which you use to shoot
at the objects on the screen, the more points you get the more difficult this
gets as you seem to be like a magnet to them in the game when they fly
at you at uncontrollable speeds, later on there is even small red ships like
yours which chase you, oh and look out for the warps which drag everything into
them and then explode, in fact sometimes it gets so crazy on the screen you
wonder which way you can manoeuvre to avoid the army of shapes heading towards
you.
In the game there are 12 achievements to be unlocked,
these involve trying to survive the first 60 seconds without using your guns &
bombs (very difficult) to getting high scores, others include saving up
bombs but all of them are fairly difficult to achieve until you get used to the
game and unlock a few, unfortunately I seem to be lagging behind the
people on my friends list when it comes to high scoring, but at least I can
score higher than 10,000 now.
There is not doubt that this game will win the hearts of many and the only
negative thing I can think to say about it is that it's not graphically
spectacular and sometimes can make you want to throw your wireless pad at the
screen.
Xbox Live
The most fun thing about this game is the leaderboards,
I mean let’s face it who doesn’t want to trounce their friends high score, this
provides hours of fun and frustration and the satisfaction when you finally beat
your friends is excellent, it can just take a whilst sometime though.
The Verdict
The developer have took this game as a extra in PGR
and made it a classic in it’s own right, sure it does have next generation
graphics but would this make it any better? I think not.
