Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is the third instalment of the highly successful movies which have been gracing our big screens over the past few years, the chances of it being a money magnet are guaranteed, therefore it comes as no surprise that the current movie has spawned a game, but does it live up to the poor name of the usual movie spin off’s we get burdened with or is it actually any good?
The game is based on both the second and third movie, at the beginning of the game there are no real surprises, using a Third Person view you take control of the main characters such as Jack, Will, Elizabeth and Barbossa, enemies will come at you from all directions in this game, with the main goal being to get from one point to another while defeating enemies in your path as well as completing side missions which in turn will help you unlock more content. There are also plenty of weapons to help you on your way, you have access to grenades, pistols and throwing knifes as well as your trusty sword, this helps to add a bit more to the game as most of it is about fighting your way through the enemies. As you progress through the game you will come over some different aspects of the gameplay, such as sword duelling in which you are only able to move left and right using a collection of jabs and swipes to cut down your enemy, incidentally this is probably the most fun part of the game, especially on the Wii.
Unfortunately the game does have it’s bad points, such as the techniques being awkward and the controls being slow to recognise your movements, this can result in the wrong moves being translated to the screen or your character attacking too late and resulting in you being more vulnerable to attacks, then there is the repetitiveness of it all, eventually you will just get bored as not much changes in the respect of the gameplay. Graphically the game does not disappoint, even on the Wii the animations are of high quality, with the textures and lighting enhancing the gameplay and showing what can be done should some effort be put into a movie licensed game. The sound impresses as much as the graphics, although the real actors are not used in the game the voiceover’s come close to the real thing. Once the single player action is over with you are also treated to some multiplayer action, this allows for you to use a second player during combat related challenges, the best thing about this is the sheer amount of characters that you can use as once the game is completed every character is usable, this is certainly impressive and offers something which you don’t see in many games.
Pirates of the Caribbean as a movie tie offers action, diversity and fun, it may not be perfect but it is certainly better than quite a few other games out there at the moment, you will probably get bored of the repetitive nature of the game after a while but it does offer some entertainment while it lasts, there are better games for the Wii but if you are a fan of the movie then you won’t go wrong by purchasing this.
