SONIC RUSH ADVENTURE
Sonic is back on the DS, believe us you should be in a rush to buy this one, read our review and find out why.

Posted by Dan Pearson on Oct 29, 2007 14:40 (Oct 29, 2007 14:40)

After a strange storm forces our heroes to crash land in their plane, Sonic and Tails are left for dead on a mysterious beach, luckily found by a strange Australian Bear/Cat thing called Marine, she fills them in on the problems on her island, and its up to Sonic, Tails and a few other characters to help save this strange new world and find a way home.>>

Whilst this is called Sonic Rush Adventure, don’t expect the likes of the Dreamcast games, this is more like Sonic Rush 2 with a bit of item gathering thrown in. The game is split into 3 different playing zones, the usual 2D scrolling platform, the "adventure" part and finally the travelling from one island to another.>>

The 2D side scrolling is what we all love about Sonic games, fast and colourful, the main character is small but well animated, but you do need a small character, due to the speed you can travel at you need to see what is coming up. As well as the usual jump and spin attacks, Sonic now has a few more new moves to try out. Mainly a power jump and a speed up to help destroy walls and enemies, but an interesting addition are the Tricks, these are pulled off whilst airborne, the more combos of tricks you manage the higher your score will be, this will also increase your chances of gaining a higher rank, and through this more materials. The main aim of each level is to gather different materials which you will then use for building new vehicles and by doing this you will then be able to travel to the further reaches of the map.

At certain parts of the game Sonic will need to travel to new islands. You start with a jet ski but later upgrade to a sail boat and even a submarine. These levels are a nice change of pace to the game, on the jet ski you control the steering using the stylus, on the submarine and sail boat you are on a on-rails shooter, taking out hazards and oncoming enemies by touching them on the screen whilst the game worries about steering.>>

When you arrive and complete an island, you will go through some cut scenes with the characters, this is probably the only annoying part of the game, especially the awful Marine.>>

> >

Early on in the game you will meet up with Blaze the Cat, who will then be a playable character and offer different moves to complete each level and although using Sonic is by far the most fun, it is nice to have the option to change.

The sheer size of this game is impressive, as well as the usual 2D scrolling levels on the main islands, there are 3D boss battles and plenty of hidden islands and races on the open sea to find. Sonic Rush is a very impressive game and one that I would recommend to anyone who owns a DS.>>

Our Rating for Sonic Rush Adventure
8.0
Story
Quite enjoyable, but the cut scenes will get boring very quickly
9.5
Lastability
Loads of islands and races to find, plus extra missions to be found through the game.
9.5
Playability
Fast, responsive controls, using the stylus to pilot your sea vessels works really well.
8.5
Originality
Great use of the dual screen on the 2D platform areas, classic Sonic gameplay and speed.
9.0
Graphics
The animation on the small characters is great, handles the speed well, a small piece of slowdown on the boss battles but nothing to worry about
8.5
Sound
Catchy tunes all through the game and the usual effects.
8.3
Overall
A huge game to get through, the mix of 2D and sea travel is a welcome idea and holds off the repetition well. Some levels are punishing but we would moan if it was easy. Another great DS title and a must for your collection.
