MEDAL OF HONOR 2 HEROES
We review Medal of Honor 2 Heroes for the Wii. Read our thoughts after the link.

Posted by Dan Pearson on Feb 29, 2008 15:11 (Feb 29, 2008 15:11)

Yet another WWII game for the console market has arrived, thankfully though Medal of Honor Heroes 2 is certainly better than EA’s previous attempts.

There are a few game play modes on MOHH2. The main campaign has you playing as an OSS Operative John Berg, taking down the Nazi’s by any means possible. This offers the usual running battle through lace w:st="on">Europelace> taking out main and secondary objectives like destroying U-Boats and collecting paperwork. There are 8 missions and plenty of objectives in each. These are well varied so boredom does not set in. Once a mission has been completed you are able to replay them in lace w:st="on">Arcadelace> mode. This mode is pure genius and makes up for a short main campaign. Essentially it is Virtua cop during WWII. The game will control your movements, all you need to worry about is the constant stream of baddies attacking, the ammo is unlimited so you can be trigger happy, ensuring you pick up a health along the way and reloading at quiet points.

The controls are perfect for a FPS, showing that EA have truly mastered the Wii format. The control stick on the Nunchuck moves you forwards, backwards and strafe and the Wii-mote controls your cursor for aiming with the B button firing. You can also duck using down on the d-pad and then peer around obstacles by twisting the nunchuck in the required direction. This is great for some of the harder firefights as cover becomes essential.

There is a good selection of weapons available, however you need to have a good idea of what is coming as you can only hold two at a time plus a few grenades. Clicking on an area to throw and then flicking the Wii-mote allows you throw grenades. You also have a pistol, luger, a few rifles, shotguns and bazookas to choose from. The sniper rifle has been implemented well, bring up the sights with A and then twist the Wii-mote to change the zoom makes for some perfect sniping.

Finally there is the multiplayer, and guess what? yeah it’s online. Up to 36 people can battle it out on 6 maps. The usual game play modes are available, death match and capture the flag. The game play is well mixed, not a fast paced blaster like Unreal. Here cover and knowing your surroundings is just as dangerous as the weapons you hold.

There are a few negative points that I have to mention, firstly, the shortness of the campaign, at only 8 missions this will not take long, and even with the inclusion of the on rails arcade shooter, which is only 1 player, it is really a rehash of what the campaign offers. Secondly, and probably the worst offender is the AI, or lack of for the enemies, they will always approach from a set location on a set path, even when you shoot them, they will take a while to drop, leaving you with that awkward situation of either shooting them some more or concentrating on the next bad guy who is bearing down on you.

Yet again EA have done a great job on the Wii, overall this is a really good package, the game has been made specifically with the Wii in mind and it shows, there are settings for all skills and even the ability to use the Wii-Zapper if you can get your hands on one. Dare I say it, EA have even bettered Nintendo at their own game, as the controls are even better than the seemingly perfect Metroid.

Our Rating for Medal of Honor 2 Heroes
7.5
Story
You are an OSS Operative and you are thrown into key moments of WWII.
8.0
Lastability
Short campaign with plenty of objectives, an arcade mode and also online functions. Will not take long to complete, but online should keep you going.
8.5
Playability
No matter what you skill level, there is an appropriate control setting for you making this universally playable. The inclusion of the Zapper adds another dimension. The tutorials are well made so you can get to grips with the Wii’s unique controls.
8.0
Originality
Its a WWII shooter, however being on the Wii gives the genre a well needed boost. The controls are perfect and take you to another level of action not able to have with the humble control pad.
7.5
Graphics
The graphics really hold up well, there is no slowdown and enemies and effects look good.
8.7
Sound
Dolby Surround really works with bullets whizzing around.
8.9
Overall
Another top game from EA and a guaranteed pleaser. Well worth putting into your collection. The Wii’s unique controls really make the game. A full online mode shows that it can be done well on the Wii and that people want this.
