METAL GEAR SOLID PORTABLE OPS +
We review Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops + for PSP.

Posted by Dan Pearson on Apr 15, 2008 16:54 (Apr 15, 2008 16:54)

As with all Metal Gear games, Konami will always release an add-on or expansion or rerelease to keep us all hooked on the many exploits of Snake. This time it is the turn of last years great Portable Ops for the PSP to be reworked. >>

>

Rather than tinker with the original story from Portable Ops, Konami have totally got rid of it, instead mainly concentrating on the online aspect of this title. This is also reflected in the lower price point. But you are not getting any budget game here.

Metal Gear Plus still has single player function, in the way of Infinity Missions which are a series of random missions over a few maps, the main aim here is to collect new characters and weapons and use them to create a team to take online, the game also includes characters from the much anticipated Guns of Patriots for the PS3. You are able to bring your characters from the original Portable Ops or start afresh, but if you are new you should take some time on the Infinity Missions to build up a good squad. There is also a training area, this allows you to get used to the commands and the maps available. It is recommended that you give the single player Infinity Missions and training a good play through first as this prepares you for the online battles.>>

>

Whilst the single player mode is essential for newcomers it can get quite boring at points and has there is no real story or interest, just getting used to the maps and collecting items. >>

>

Online though  is where this game really shines and offering a target range, deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture and team capture missions for up to 6 players. You are also able to play against players using the first Portable Ops game, however you are unable to bring the Plus exclusive characters and maps over.>>

>

Graphically the game is certainly no disappointment, in fact it more than stands up to it’s PS2 counterpart in this respect. The only issue with the graphics is that sometimes characters will disappear into walls due to a few glitches, however this is forgiveable.

The original Ops offers the best in single player and online, this version just adds a few new parts to the online experience and due to this you should view this really as an expansion for the original title, buy this as a standalone and go online and you will struggle with the more hardened players. Don’t be fooled by the price point, get Portable Ops first, if you like the online aspect then by all means give this a go.>>

Our Rating for Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops +
5.0
Story
Nothing really, the Infinity Missions have no story other than their objectives.
7.5
Lastability
Single player this is not worth your time, if you really like the online mode than this will last a long time, especially getting all of the available characters.
7.5
Playability
Smooth online play with no lag. Easy to set up games. Controls will take a bit of getting used to.
7.0
Originality
It does not bring anything really new to the Portable Ops games other than a slightly improved online system.
9.0
Graphics
Almost as good as its PS2 counterpart, characters will disappear into walls at times but nothing major.
8.0
Sound
Great soundtrack that will have fans pleased.
7.9
Overall
A great game, as long as you see it as an expansion, get Portable Ops first then try this for more online action.
