Schizoid is another game from the same school as Geometry Wars, those neon graphics, simple stick controls for movement and an arena to battle it out in. However where Geometry Wars is a single player effort, Schizoid boasts to be the best co-op experience for Xbox Live. The single player mode has you playing as a blue ship, with the AI controlling the red ship, control is very simple, all you need is the left stick to move around the screen and the aim is to clear each arena as quick as possible, however the twist is that you are only able to fly into the same coloured bad guys as your ship, hit the wrong colour and you lose a life. ![]() There are plenty of varied and weird looking enemies to take out, all with a cool ultra neon effect, kind of like those weird deep sea creatures on National Geographic. Each enemy has a different attack pattern, scorpions will flood towards the opposite colour to destroy them while hatchers will lay little eggs all over the screen and if you leave them for too long and they will hatch into more enemies.
Each arena varies in size and shape, from a standard square, a star shape and corridors. To ramp up the co-op part of the game you also have power ups to use, however these can only be used when one ship collects and brings it to the other ship, as soon as you touch each other you unleash a smart bomb which takes out loads of the enemies.
If you don’t have anyone to play with the single player is OK, however the AI ship will at times run off and not provide sufficient cover for you resulting in game over. There is another mode were you are able to control both ships, it is fun at first but it takes real skill to train your left hand and right hand to move at different times.
The co-op mode is more fast paced as you can talk to the person next to you and get some game plans together, even better you can take it online and try over Live, but the usual has occurred, no-one is playing online, but if the local co-op is anything to go then it should be great online, so maybe try getting some people from your friends list to take a punt with you.
