Next in the Summer Xbox Live release fest is Galaga Legions, an old school shooter with a bit of current gen spit and polish. But is this current run of dragging up old games for a new look getting a bit thin? Galaga Legions could have been a poor attempt at redoing an old game that some of us may have fond memories of as a child, thankfully its not the case here, what we have instead is an old idea with plenty of new spin to satisfy even the newer generations of gamers.
Galaga Legions is still a 2D single screen shoot em up with attacks by the enemy Galaga, you will be confronted with wave after wave of enemy fighters and it’s up to you to clear each screen and survive to the end boss battle. The look of the game has been upped to a very smart HD look, the explosions and enemy craft are impressive and at times fill the screen with no slowdown. There are a few cool touches during the fights, before a wave of Galaga appear, blue neon lines will trace around the screen, showing the trajectory of the oncoming attack, then the enemies will fly on screen in the same pattern, making it a bit easier for you to pre plan your moves which is turn makes this simple shooter into a more strategic battle for the screen. Each Galaga wave also has a head ship, taking this out will result in the whole line of Galaga blowing up, kind of like a smart bomb, however these are usually well protected by weaker Galaga so swift thinking and good use of the satellites is required.
There are so many enemies on screen, at times filling it to bursting point, thankfully then you do have some help to take on these hordes, as you also have at your disposal two satellite weapons. You can drop these guys with the right stick, pushing the direction you wish them to face, everytime you shoot, they will. A big plus to the satellite weapons is that these are invincible, so during a boss battle you can drop them on the bosses flight path and let them shoot whilst you concentrate on dodging the incoming fire. On top of that you will occasionally get a huge weapon upgrade, the Legion Attack. which sucks up enemies into a black hole and then lines up about 16 ships behind you all firing in unison, this gets you through some sticky moments, but they will eventually get shot down. There are a few game modes to play through and the difficulty is well paced, however the later levels are so fast and frantic if you blink, you die. These past few weeks have been hard on the Live Points wallet and it does not look like it will start to slow down any time soon. Galaga Legions is yet another one of the latest batch of releases that is well worth you time and pennies.
