The great Tiger Woods PGA Tour series returns for another year with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 so can anything topple this golf game from the top?
The simple answer to that is no, for yet another year running EA have done the unthinkable and released another great addition to the PGA Tour franchise. Many people feel that the annual release of sports game is just a huge money making spin to rid us gamers of our hard earned cash and in some cases they can be right, but when it comes to EA and the Tiger Woods series they are far from it.
Straight from the off you notice changes have been made, instead of being introduced by the great man Tiger Woods himself, you are approached by his coach, Hank Haney. He will explain the new Dynamic Skills system that the game heavily uses. Here you are ranked on four areas during each game, drive, approach, short and putt. If you do well in a game these stats will increase, allowing for better shots like power and precision, however play badly and the stats will also drop. They are represented in a very simple points system at the end of each game mode you play. Hank will then go back to a specific area of the course and give you the chance to practice certain shots to increase the stats. As well as the tips from Hank you also have a Swing Feedback Meter, a real time measure showing you with a very simple line graphic on the golf ball if you are slicing the ball to much. If you feel that you are constantly miss-hitting the ball, take it to the Club Tuning area, here Hank will allow you to hit some balls and then make suggestions on how to make the shots better. Once you have adjusted to your needs you can take the clubs out to the course and hit those perfect straight shots and also learn to control you ball with confidence. The in game controls are very well balanced, for starters you have two different modes of hitting the ball, the classic power meter that you press a few times to get power and slice plus EA’s stick control, were you pull back on the right stick and push forward to strike. You can mix each style during the game, the stick style is ideal for drives and the power bar is more suited for approach shots that require more precision. There is also an after touch mode, whilst the ball is in the air, hit the A button and push the direction of the spin you wish the ball to go in, there is only a slight adjustment to the ball after it lands but it can make the difference between an easy 1 foot putt and a tough 15 foot putt. Whilst on the putting green you have another new addition, the putt cam, you can only use this once per putt but it will help you understand the lye of the green and the distance.
All of the game modes have had a little tweaking as well, the main campaign is as huge as ever, taking you through a whole year of events and championships. The Beat Tiger mode has been overhauled, now you have to complete certain tasks before being able to take on the golfers and ultimately Tiger himself. You also have a huge collection of mini games and traditional games to play through including Battle Golf, T.I.G.E.R, Target and Stroke Play.
The area I am most impressed with is the online mode, with a very simple idea it has revolutionised the way you play online golf, everyone plays at once, no longer do you have to wait for your turn, which can get boring for a 4 player game, instead you all go for the hole at the same time and each of the players balls is represented on screen by a different coloured line. Not only does it speed up gameplay but it also allows some of the novice players to pick up tips for better approaches from the more experienced. The create a character mode has returned with the same great level of customization as before, however this time you are also able to take a photo using the consoles camera, upload you face, map out the main face areas, wait 20 minutes and then you can play as yourself in game, I say as you, the game had trouble representing a beard on screen so I came out looking more like Dustin Hoffman with a skin disease but it was still a fun process and maybe with a bit of tweaking and a shave I can get a better likeness.
The Tiger Woods games just get better and better with every release and this one has just as much a place in your console as last years version. A solid new addition to the franchise.
