A year on and Bioshock finally comes to the PS3, but does this underwater adventure offer anything new? Take a deep breath and read on find out.

BioShock is based in an underwater haven called Rapture, built in the 50’s by a pioneering scientist Andrew Ryan, he felt that the world was going the wrong way so decided to make a utopian paradise for the elite, with all their needs and wants catered for. Many scientific breakthroughs had been made at Rapture, mostly with the aid of an underwater parasite nicknamed ADAM. When ADAM is linked to a human it is able to alter their genetic makeup, initially allowing for external modifications like cosmetic surgery, but later moved internal, allowing manipulation and control of even the elements. 

The game starts with a huge plane crash, you are an unknown character and somehow you survive and swim to a nearby island, through investigation you begin to realise that you have landed on Rapture, the once great underwater city is a decaying monument of its former glory with art deco carvings crumbling into fresh pools of water leaking from the hulls. The further into Rapture you go the more deep and twisty the story gets, with you meeting many new friends and enemies along the way, including the poster boy named Big Daddy and of course the Little Sisters.

Being a year old now I would have expected plenty changes to the original formula but there is really nothing major to report other than a few subtle changes. First off you will notice the lengthy installation and then finally around about 10 minutes of installation and 5 gigs of your hard drive later your ready to take your first steps into Rapture. One of the few differences added to the game comes in the form of a new difficulty setting which greatly reduces the amount of items that you pick up along the way. Thankfully this game also caters for Trophies, these are similar to the Xbox achievements but also have the addition of playing the game without using Vita-Chambers.

The PS3 version still has all of the great Plasmids and Gene Tonics to use and collect, Plasmids allow you to throw fire, freeze enemies, use telekinesis to catch and throw items and there is even a cool Plasmid that causes enemies to attack each other or have Big Daddies protect you for a change. Gene Tonics can allow you to hack computers quicker, increase your strength and also surround you in an electrical field so if anyone touches you they will get a powerful shock. On top of the plasmids you also have your more traditional weapons including shotguns, flame throwers, crossbows and machine guns. All of these items are upgradable and improve on areas like recoil and ammo capacity.

With an extra year behind it, the developers have managed to tweak the game a bit more in the looks department, some of the backgrounds look better than the Xbox version, but this is really only a slight improvement, Xbox owners need not despair.

Playing the game again has been a real treat, I still love the look of Rapture with its different areas, the initial medical area is a blood spattered mess of body parts and wandering inhabitants and the colorful and glitzy feel of the entertainment area, full of stage shows and one-armed bandits. Each area has its own personality but at the same time has a great art deco theme going all the way through.
 
Though no multiplayer of any sort is included, there is a grayed out area for the up and coming challenge rooms content, however at the moment there is no set release date for this or indeed no clues as to what this entails, so keep an eye out on our daily updated news area for any information.

There is loads to do in this game, it’s not just a FPS, you’ll also have to do plenty of exploration, loads of hacking, inventing and upgrading and the obligatory collecting of items to get the whole twisted story. I look forward to seeing what is on offer in the challenge rooms content, but out with this you are essentially getting the same game Xbox owners have had for a year, and it’s a game that everyone should experience.
