Ratchet and Clank’s first outing on the PS3 was nothing short of genius, there were loads of amazing weapons to choose from, all the usual humour you would expect from the pair and a wide spread adventure that was hard not to love. It’s fair to say that while Crash Bandicoot and Sonic seem to be losing their appeal, Ratchet and Clank seem to be getting stronger, so does their latest adventure, Quest for Booty keep this trend going even though it is a watered down version?
Quest for Booty, while not being a very lengthy game still has everything you would expect from the series, innovative weapons, good humour and the same fantastic graphics of the first series, there is one major omission though, Clank. Picking up from the last game, Clank has been kidnapped by the mysterious Zoni, so Ratchet and his companion Talwyn set out to find Captain Darkwater who may be able to help them, however things soon turn nasty after resurrecting the Captain and soon Ratchet finds himself not only searching for his friend but also being hindered along the way by the good captain and his pirates.
![]() Although Quest for Booty is short, it still manages to pack in the puzzles, none more so than when you reach Darkwater Cove where you need to gain access to the islands main vault, in order to do this you are required to copy tunes on a large pirate keyboard, pour a pirate a drink and then finally manipulate some steel structures in order to make a shadow appear, these are the type of puzzles that make this game so great, although the hints included within each of the levels perhaps make things too easy.
The weapons included in this game are not really anything we haven’t seen before, though there is one exception and it’s a big one. Using Ratchet’s Wrench you are now able to make the most of the newly included Kinetic Tether ability, this is a fantastic addition to the game, what it does is basically give you the option to pull objects closer to you or manipulate them in other ways, so for example should you not be able to reach a platform, you can simple target it with your tether ability and pull it towards you, this also works for springs which launch Ratchet into the air, simply target the spring, lower it to the ground and then get on to be launched onto the next platform.
During your adventure you will come across some rather dark caves, are all sorts of monsters which will eat you up in these dimly lit places, so to help you along the way Ratchet can now pick up some rather funky glow in the dark creatures which act as a torch, this not only repels other creatures but also helps you to avoid falling down the many crevices which are dotted around the caves.
![]() Graphically Ratchet and Clank looks as good as it ever has, the environments and characters have the same detailed approach as the full retail game and the green glow that appears whenever the enemies are near really adds to the atmosphere. As far as presentation goes this again proves that the Playstation Store can provide some pretty stunning looking games at a fraction of the price.
As you can see from what I have written above, Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty still manages to cram in the innovation even with a smaller adventure, sure some of the things you will have come to expect from the series are sadly missing, however it is to the developers credit that the game still feels as fun and original as ever.
