YOU’RE IN THE MOVIES
We review You’re in the Movies. Should you pay the admission price for this game or wait for it to hit the bargain bucket? Read our thoughts after the link.

You’re in the Movies is the latest game from Codemasters and Zoe Mode, it’s exclusive to the Xbox 360 and it’s aim seems to be to grab the attention of those of us out there who took one look at the Wii and said “I’ll have some of that”.

A casual game by nature, You’re in the Movies aims at bringing the family together so that it can entertain with some quite hilarious B movies starring none other than the users themselves. The way the game works is that up to four players will take part in various mini games, acting over the top and trying to look as ridiculous as possible, surprisingly this is not hard to do when you are doing things such as flailing your arms swatting wasps, running in clown pants to do a bungee run or driving an imaginary scooter. As well as acting out the aforementioned scenes you will also be pulling poses for the camera and will also be required to do things like point and scream or act all heroic. There are certainly plenty of mini games that you will be greeted with, however in the end most of them boil down to you flailing your arms around or running on the spot pulling funny faces for the Xbox Live Vision Camera.

There is no doubt that during your posing and acting you will be in hysterics most of the time, more so if you are actually playing with the full quota of family or friends, however these fits of laughter are nothing compared to what will happen when you see the end result. Although the mini games are fun enough, it’s what happens when they finish that you are really building up to, you see, all of the actions that you perform during the game are collated and then select moves are moulded into one of the 30 B style movies that is chosen by you at the start of the game, these can range from giant lizards attacking the city to villains and superheroes battling it out, it’s all amusing stuff and to begin with is certainly worth the wait.

So this neatly brings us to the games problems, for one, the Xbox Live Camera, unfortunately this device isn’t the greatest in the world, it’s resolution is pretty poor, which is very evident in dimly lit rooms and therefore the quality of your movie will be affected should you suffer from a lack of light, although to be fair the game does it’s best to counter this within it’s options menu. Probably the main problem with the camera is trying to set it up to work with the game, it seems to take for ever to adjust it so that your on screen appearance is not full of holes, which is frustrating considering I saw it work properly at a recent event, although they did have a brightly lit room and a white screen in the background.

Another problem and probably the major reason that this game is destined for failure is that playing with four players will result in a 30 minute wait to see your movie, not much can be done about this either given that this is how long it takes to play through the mini games with this many players, and no matter how much fun these are, believe me it won’t be long before you are bored playing them, unless of course downloadable content comes to save the day.

One final option for the game is that once you have played through a few movies you will then be able to create and direct your own, this allows you to choose from any scene in the game, (of which there are quite a few) and then record the parts of each actor, add sound effects and/or music, apply visual effects and then save it for showing of to friends and family or for reliving your artistic vision at a later date. This part of the game will probably give it more longevity than if it was excluded, creative people should certainly enjoy playing with the options here.

As you may have guessed, although I enjoyed this game to begin with I soon came to the realisation that like the Wii, once bought this will sit on the shelf gathering dust, sure it’s a real good laugh when you first play, but after that it becomes just another cash in on the casual players pocket.
