If there is one game the DS was missing then it was a Football Management game, however this is no longer the case as Football Director DS is about to hit the handheld and give football fans out there that think they know better than the real managers a chance to prove themselves.
Football Director DS thankfully offers quite a lot of depth, more than you would probably have expected. The game is an officially licensed product for the English Football League and therefore includes real team and player names, which obviously makes all the difference for a game such as this. Given that the game is called Football Director you might have guessed that there is slightly more to it than just winning games, yes, you also must keep the books balanced and make a profit as well as training your team and finally choosing the team to guide your club to victory and ultimately, trophy success.

In the general days in between matches the top screen on the DS will display your status, informing you how the board and fans feel about your performance, it will also remind you of your current budget and your league position. Meanwhile the bottom screen will act like a vidiprinter, informing you of all the latest news such as all the latest transfer movements.
Should you wish to buy players in between matches this is made fairly simple also, all you need to do is make your way to the transfer screen, select the player you wish to buy and slap in a bid for him. In fact any day to day activity is very simple whether this is renewing contracts, controlling the club accounts or going to the job centre to recruit staff.
The Match screen is laid out in a slightly different way to the normal game screen, the top screen shows the score, scorers and players booked, while the bottom screen plays out the action of the match, informing you of all the major on pitch incidents. As previously mentioned there are also icons on the left of this screen to access stats, tactics and substitutes.
![]() As should probably be expected the game isn’t quite perfect, unlike in say Football Manager, players only seem to have one position such as Defender, Midfielder and Forward, there are no left wingers or sweepers, therefore unless you know the players well, choosing the correct formation may see players who would otherwise play on the wing playing on the inside instead, this won’t affect the match but it is hardly realistic. This is probably a minor flaw though all things considered.
As far as Presentation goes, Football Director is pretty impressive, the database style look that the game has suits the DS well, it all runs fairly smoothly and there is not a whole lot of waiting to be done while the game loads.
Football Director DS is a very impressive first attempt at a management sim for the DS, there are some minor imperfections, overall however this is a very addictive and fun game that any football fan should enjoy.
