RESISTANCE 2
We review Resistance 2 for the Paystation 3. Is this the must have shooter that PS3 fans hoped it would be? Read on.

Resistance 2 was one of the great big hopes that Sony showed off at E3 this year, it looked good then and it certainly looks good now, however does it deliver where it counts? Well let’s find out.

The story in Resistance 2 sees the game pick up from where the original left off with Sergeant Hale, who destroyed the London command centre of the invading alien Chimera returning to the United States where he becomes part of a special programme known as the Sentinels, who were formed due to the United States Government having a premonition that attack was imminent. Move forward two years and it seems that the Government where right as everywhere you look there is devastation, therefore cue the Sentinels, who are basically genetically modified humans, having been injected with the chimerian virus to give them an extra edge in battle, although this does have it’s side effects too.

The action though is what any real shooter fan is interested in and Resistance 2 has that by the bucket load. Straight from the off you are Thrust into the action and as you fight your way through the chimerian you will notice just how much fun this game is, whether you are gunning down the ravagers, attack drones or are struggling to take down a titan you cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer amount of these enemies, who will keep coming at you, no matter where you hide for cover.

Thankfully staying alive is a matter of putting your head down and staying away from enemy fire, much like in many other shooters if your screen starts to turn red when being fired upon then it’s time to duck. The game is saved each time you reach a checkpoint and therefore you must remember this before charging into the middle of a pack of chimera, because otherwise you will be starting from the last checkpoint, and unless you enjoy this type of pain then you should probably learn to resist the gun hoe attitude.

One of the things I like most about the enemies is the way Grims, which are Zombie like creatures just charge at you, there really is no time to think in this situation and they can be quite dangerous since they hunt in packs, there were many times that I was caught out with these creatures as I happened to run out of ammo just as they were charging at me, therefore I had to do my best to fight them off. A good lesson here is to make sure you pick up as much ammo as possible.

Probably the most exciting thing about the game is the boss battles. These are quite exciting events given that you are usually tasked with taking down some nasty creatures. All of the bosses range in size but they are all pretty tough in their own way, lucky then that you have some pretty impressive weapons at your disposal.

Funnily enough one of my favorite weapons (to begin with anyway) was the magnum, I just love the way you can fire at enemies and then with a press off R2 watch them explode into the air, sheer quality, and of course there are more devastating weapons than the magnum, such as the classic bullseye or the V7 splicer. Whatever enemy you encounter there is sure to be a weapon to take them down, even if it does require a bit of hard graft into the bargain. Should you run out of bullets during a battle then changing your weapons is a breeze, simply press the triangle button and your other will weapon appear, though lets just hope you remembered to pick up the ammo for that one. Another thing to remember is that you can only carry two weapons at a time so it is best to choose wisely.

While the single player campaign in this game is engrossing from beginning to end as well as being a joy to play, the online multiplayer mode is where the fun is really at. Split into two modes, co-op and competitive, the online mode throws you into the action against the enemy in impressive style. The co-op mode has you choose one of three classes as you work with your online colleagues, battling through the chimera to your objective. The classes included are Medic, Special Ops and Soldier, the Medic is used to heal teammates, he does this by draining the enemy of their health and then returning to heal his wounded, meanwhile the special ops main purpose is to refill the ammo of the rest of the unit, while the solider of course takes care of business by blasting through the chimera. Throughout the co-op mode you will gain experience, allowing you to unlock new items such as weapons, equipment or even new abilities. The online co-op mode is great fun, which is probably due to the fantastic map design and the sheer amount of enemies that you will face.

The competitive mode is also pretty special thankfully, supporting up to 60 players and including modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Skirmish, the competitive mode is great fun for a quick online game and quite incredibly pretty much lag free, even when there are loads of players in the game.

There is no doubt that Resistance 2 is the game that I hoped it would be, not only is the single player campaign quite stunning, but when combined with not one but two excellent multiplayer modes it also packs in a whole lot of gameplay onto one disc. The sheer size of some of the enemies you will encounter will leave you astounded and may very well have you clamoring for more.  Resistance 2 is definitely a must buy for anyone who owns a Playstation 3 console, of that there is no doubt.
