NINJATOWN
We review the excellent Ninjatown for Nintendo DS. Read our thoughts after the link.

The Nintendo DS is full of fun innovative games, and while I could name I would probably run out of space so I won’t. The point is that occasionally a game comes along that does fall into this category, but due to it not being such a big name release it just seems to get lost in the pile with all the other great games on the system that people should play but probably never will, the latest of these no big name games is called Ninjatown and it is actually one of the most addictive and fun games I have played on the Nintendo DS so far.

Ninjatown sees you take on the role of Ol’ Master Ninja in defending your land after Mr. Demon and his minions launch a surprise attack. This prompts the Master Ninja to use his tactical skills to defend the city against the demons, which is done using the top down perspective that so many classic Nintendo DS games choose.

The aim of the game is to strategically place ninja huts in order to stop the wave upon wave of demons from reaching their objective, to aid you in this quest you have a good variety of Ninjas that you can place, these include basic Black Wee Ninjas, Yellow Anti Ninjas, the Business and the Mountain Ninja, the latter two are gained in later levels though so at first you will be relying on the skills of the others. As well as the melee Ninjas just mentioned you will also have access to ranged Ninjas, these vary from Sniper Ninjas who fire pea shooters at the enemy to White Ninjas who throw snowballs to freeze the enemy on the spot. Ninjatown also gives you the ability to upgrade your ninjas, this allows you to make them stronger which is certainly needed as the enemy becomes stronger as you progress through the waves of attacks.

Strategy plays a big part in this game, therefore it is wise to try and choose your ninjas wisely when placing them to stop the enemy, for example placing Wee Ninjas on the ground is all very well, however they won’t be much use against the enemies who fly, therefore it is best to make sure you keep an eye of the type of enemy you are about to face and place the ninjas accordingly. Another thing to note is that you can also place modifier huts such as the training dojo during the game, simply place this next to a ninja hut and its occupants will feel the benefits such as increased attack power. You really do use everything at your disposal wisely as should you let the enemies reach their objective then you will lose a heart for everyone that does, therefore when you run out of hearts its game over.

As well as attacking Ninjas you also have access to Ol’ Master Ninjas power cane, this will allow you to make use of his powers to aid you in your quest, although their use is limited as they cost happiness points to activate, which is earned when you defeat enemies.

While playing the game, the left side of the top screen shows your map, as well as the cookies (which act as in game currency) and hearts icons, also included on this screen is the enemy wave number, the level of the enemy and the map time. On the right side of the top screen is Ol’ Master Ninja himself, though he doesn’t seem to do much except float in the air using a hot air balloon. The bottom screen of course is what you use to place your ninjas and take on the enemy and is obviously where all the action takes place.

Ninjatown is a fun strategic game which feels right at home on the DS, the graphics are basic but cute, however it’s the gameplay that are the real star, making this one of the best games you will buy on your DS should you wisely invest in this game.
