FOOTBALL MANAGER HANDHELD 2009![]() Posted by Joe Anderson on Dec 7, 2008 18:06 (Dec 7, 2008 18:06) |

Football Manager has always been a hard game to stop playing once you start, so a PSP version makes perfect sense as it means you can continue your addiction while on the move, sure it may draw you some weird looks when you scream at your useless centre forward for missing an open goal as you sit on the bus, but why should you care about that in the middle of a crucial match.
Now I have to confess to being a bit of Football Manager addict, in fact over the years it is probably been one of the only games to grace my PC due to the Xbox 360 and PS3 getting most of my attention. When Football Manager 2009 for PSP came through the letterbox I was both excited and worried, I mean how can this game possible be as good on a handheld as it is on the PC? is be watered down? Well no, not really in fact’s it’s pretty much the Football Manager we all know and love but in your pocket.
![]() Picking the game up I was worried that the controls may be fairly complicated, or may not work as well as I thought, I was wrong. Within minutes of playing the game I was easily able to navigate around all of the menus like a PSP management pro, in fact I’m fairly confident that anyone who has played the game on PC before will pick this up in no time as the controls are very straightforward and suit the system perfectly. Newcomers to the series may find things a little less straightforward as the game offers an unbelievable amount of options, allowing you to choose your team, train them, make tactical adjustments during matches, buy and sell players, to be honest practically anything you can do in real football is probably included here such is the depth of the game.
Before taking part in a match you can do all the regular things such as choose your team, assign freekick, set piece and penalty takers and adjust your formation to suit your thinking or the style of your opponents.
The matches themselves are played out in a similar style to the previous PC versions, most of the action will be displayed in text on the screen, this will allow you to view the goal scorers, any bookings and the time lapsed and what is taking part on the pitch. The only time the screen changes during a match is when there is some real edge of your seat action, this will prompt the pitch and those familiar player numbers to appear, which represent each of the respective players on the field, during these parts of the match you can view the goals, both for and against you and any other exciting things that may be happening.
The presentation of the menus and all of the information on the PSP is crystal clear, everything is very colourful and very easy to read despite the smaller screen. It is to the developers credit that they have managed to squeeze all the info onto the PSP screen without losing the quality.
Overall Football Manager 2009 on the PSP is a very impressive game, it has depth, is well presented and it makes the perfect companion if you are desperate to manage your team on the go. There is not a handheld football management game on the market that can touch this, so if you are looking for one then look no further.
