Lumines has had numerous incarnations over the past few years and now another has hit the Playstation Network in the form of Lumines Supernova, but what does the new PSN exclusive bring?
The bare bones of Lumines is a very simple arcade puzzle game. 2 x 2 blocks consisting of a mix of two colours fall from the top of the screen, you need to move and position them at the bottom of the screen, trying to make a group of four or more matching colours. As you build the blocks a line will run horizontally along the screen removing the matching colours and earning you points, the more colours you have together the more combos you earn. Where the game gets you hooked is in the skins. These are essentially levels that last the length of the song being played. Each skin has a different track and background, plus the block colours will change, at times giving you an almighty headache if you concentrate too hard. ![]() The main single player challenge mode will play until you hit the top of the screen, each new skin you earn will be unlocked and then you are able to use these in your own custom games, selecting your favourite tunes. The other modes are Lumines mainstays, Puzzle Mode is where you have to make a certain shape like a flower, giraffe or airplane. You also have a time attack mode and a mission mode where you complete certain objectives like clearing the screen in 1 move. New to the mix is Dig Down mode, here you have a set time limit to clear a set amount of columns, this is a great change of pace for Lumines and is a quick play game unlike the open-ended main mode. The game also includes a Sequencer which allows you to make your own track from a selection of pre-set beats and effects that you can save and then play along to, this is a neat touch, although I’m not sure how many people who own the game will experiment with this.
With so many skins available to unlock there is bound to be something for everyone, with clever mixes of electro, Mexican, classic and rock, your ears are in for a treat, the Rez like soundeffects when you move the blocks and make combos compliment the music perfectly, almost like your own little beatbox. Not to be left out, you eyes will also be treated with real crisp high def graphics, large puzzle blocks on screen and some very cool background videos, including one for Sony’s very own LittleBigPlanet For a single player experience the game is a must have download, however the game really drops it when it comes to multiplayer options. All you have is a local 2 player mode and online leaderboards, but that’s right, no online play. This is a real shame and one that may put off a lot of PSN users especially since the Xbox Live version provides users with one.
