CALLING ALL CARS

Posted by Joe Anderson on 26/05/2007

The Playstation store has been getting a hard time from UK users recently, mainly due to the lack of decent content that is to be found on it, unfortunately there isnt really anything there that would challenge the best Xbox Live has to offer, however this is about to change with a little game probably everyone has heard of, yeah it’s Calling All Cars and it’s great.

The whole purpose of Calling All Cars is quite simple really, the bad guys have escaped and you need to recapture them and take them back to jail, however there are up to three other players in your way who want to do exactly the same, meaning you will have to use every trick in the book to beat them to it.

The beauty of Calling All Cars is that it’s really easy to pick up and play, for a start the controls are simple, meaning that all you need to do is press start and enjoy, however during the game you will soon find that things arent quite so easy because as soon as you catch a criminal your opponents will be using every weapon they can get their mitts on to make sure they get the criminal from you and take him to jail themselves. The computer controlled opponents can be especially tricky as they seem to know all the routes to get to you before you get to your destination, there are other twists also like jail doors closing and ramps raising, therefore making your life more difficult and forcing you to find alternative means for disposing of your criminal such as the occasional passing police wagons or helicopters.

The weapons that your opponents use come in three forms, a magnet, missle launcher and hammer, you can obviously make use of these too, this is done by driving through the various question marks spread about the levels.

The game comes in two guises, with Single Player and Multiplayer modes, to unlock all the cars in the game (and there is a lot) you will need to play through the single player mode, unfortunately this can get quite frustrating as the computer controlled opponents are very hard to beat, this is mainly due to them utilising the weapons better than you will ever be able to meaning that it will be a while before you manage to unlock all the cars.

Although the single player mode has it’s charms, multiplayer mode is where this game becomes an instant classic, you will find yourself playing for hours against your human counterparts such is the fun to be had and there is just so many options too with four player split-screen, four player online support, two player split-screen while online including voice support, you get some great banter over the headset as you crush your opponents under a hammer and steal thier criminal, it top fun, the action is just so fast paced and fun that you will not notice the time go by, in fact the only downside to this part of the game is the fact that there is only four maps, although hopefully more will become available soon via the Playstation Store.

Graphically this game is very charming, with its HD looks and it’s cartoon like features, it is hard not to love it, the sound also fits in well and completes the package quite nicely.

Overall Calling All Cars could be said to be the perfect example of what a Original Playstation Store game should be, sure the single player is a little short, but what it lacks here it more than makes up for in the madness that is the multiplayer game, if you want to feel good about the Playstation Store again then by downloading this game you will.
