Sony have today posted a video walkthrough of the XMB features of firmware 2.40 on thier official blog.

New features include the ability to access the cross media bar when playing a game, allowing you to send messages to friends, read messages and play music during games. You can also access the settings and start any other game saved on your harddrive, by choosing the game and then quiting the one you are in.

Finally a clock and date setting has been added, allowing you to view the time on the XMB.
